Switzerland will have to enforce the 4th Geneva Convention*
One
year after the attack by the Israeli army on Gaza, solidarity actions
for the trapped people in Gaza take place around the world. The Gaza
Freedom March (Dec 27th 2009 to Jan 2nd 2010) going from Rafah towards
Erez at the Israeli border with international participation – among
them people from Switzerland - calls for the end of the blockade.Implementation of the recommendations of the Goldstone report End the blockade of Gaza On Sunday, Dec 27 a week of events started in Bern and Geneva with thousands of candles to commemorate the dead and in support of the Gaza Freedom March. These events were continued in the subsequent week at many places in Switzerland. The UN General Assembly supports - together with the voice of Switzerland - the UN commission of inquiry report by Richard Goldstone. The report specifies the violations of international humanitarian law and vio- lations of human rights before, during and after the military aggression of Israel in the Gaza Strip, and points to the still ongoing blockade being illegal unter international law. The blockade prevented the emergency treatment of civilians during the military offensive. To date, the blockade prevents reconstructing the houses of 50.000 homeless people and of civilian infra- structure. During last year, several UN agencies and human rights organizations have repeatedly gave an account on the plight of the 1.5 million residents of the Gaza Strip. The extent of the blockade produces, among other things, lack of medical care, food and clean drinking water. The persistence of the blockade violates international law, represents a collective punishment of the population and undermines the credibility of international humanitarian law.
